Task 1
Task 1A) I am going to produce a TV advert for my video production. I will research the range of different methods such as personnel, finance, materials and contributors. To ensure I have the right personnel required for the TV Advert I will need to form a team of around four people. The reason for a small - sized group is because I will be filming in a local location which keeps expenses such as travel costs down. On the other hand, if I was to structure a professional team. I could use my own sources to find skilled people such as cameraman, director, etc. However, I could use a suitable media production job advertisment company to find skilled people. Starnow is an example of a job advertisment company as it highlights auditions and jobs to actors, models, crew, etc. They have links to big companies such as BBC, ITV, MTV, Disney, etc. In my team, I have assigned job roles to each members to suit their skill in a specific area. In the group there is a producer, they will oversee the whole production all the way through from pre - production to the finished product. Furthermore, there is a director who will have control of the creative and visual aspects of the production. Additonally, there will be a co-producer who will work along side the producer and a cameraman who will capture the content for the production.
Finance is a big element of the production as I would need to work towards a budget and spend money on elements such as, personnel, locations, facility hire, etc. I could contact a funding company such as ANGELSDEN who aim to raise between £50,000 to £1 million for companies they select to pitch. They also do small business loans to smaller investors. Also, Creative England offers a range of funding opportunities for film and TV, games, tech, etc. They support the sustainable growth of independent creative businesses. For the purpose of production of our advert, I will have a small budget of £15. The reason for this being so low is because most of the cost is covered through the college. This includes, hiring equipment, skilled people, hiring locations, etc. Additonally, we paided £3.00 for the LYNX Deodorant which only took a small percentage out of the budget.
Furthermore, there is a range of materials I could use for my project such as sounds and music. I can access these for free through creative commons. Creative commons helps you legally use copyright free multimedia content which you can use in your projects. It also clearly explains on how to credit others work. Also, I have access to a large sound library which I can find thousands of free sounds. I'm looking for a track which is upbeat and fresh and stands out to all the other tracks. I can access free audio samples using YouTube which I can use throughout the project espically in the post - production process. This will help reinforce realism within the project as it adds more depth to the world we're trying to create.
Contributors are a key asset to the production as they're specialists within their field. They also provide access to the location I will be filming at which is on the college grounds. This is pivitol as the location is the heart of the production and is where all the action happens. It is important that I remember to get permission and consent from the contributors if I'm going to use their expertise within my production. I will also need to acquire actors to star in the advert. This will make the project look realisitc as it brings the world to life. What I will look for in contributors is someone who is enthusiastic about the subject which will be covered within the advert.
Task 1B) During the filming process I need to ensure I have the correct insurance. The college provides public liability insurance for me so I know I am covered. Public Liability insurance will protect me if cast/crew or members of the public suffer any injuries or property damage. It covers any legal expenses. I will obtain a policy in the very early stages of pre-production and ensure this runs all the way through to post-production. This way I know all legal responsibilities of the production are covered.
Furthermore, there are many regulatory bodies involved in film and television that cover TV Adverts. Ofcom is a prime example of an advertising standards agency. The agency is put in place to protect the interest of people from harmful and offensive content broadcasted on TV and radio. Additionally, the purpose of ASA is acting on complaints and checking the media to take action against any misleading, harmful or offensive advertisements. Many TV advertisements have got into trouble for producing inappropriate material and misleading information. I need to ensure I comply within the rules of ASA and Ofcom.
Trade Unions is an organisation which is aimed at negotiating agreements regarding pay and conditions, discussing memebers concerns, etc. The organisation is formed by workers or employees. They protect the interests of its members in the workplace. An example of a trade association is APA. Their objective is to provide the best possible working environment for the members to work in. They provide production advice, standard contracts, recommended crew rates, etc. For my TV Advert production I need to be aware I have a safe working environment for the workers when filming. I will do this by ensuring the cast and crew are looked after and any issues that occur I report to the college.
Task 1C) Producing a TV Advert has many requirements that are vital to creating a successful finished product. This includes, time, facilities, materials, locations etc. Firstly, there are many jobs roles that are required to produce the TV Advert. These include, director, editor, research, make up/costume, marketing, etc. One of the main pre production requirements is timescales I need to make sure I have strict deadlines throughout the production from pre-production to the final product. For example, making sure I have all the pre-production documentations in place as this will benefit me in the filming process as it will run smoothly. Deadlines are crucial for my production as it means I know I'm on track and meeting expectations. Additionally, when I hired the equipment I ensured that it was hired for a period of two weeks. This was so I could do test shots and still have access to the equipment after filming incase I was required to do pick-up shots. Also, I was informed that if needed I could hire the equipment out for a further two weeks. This was something to follow back on if needed. Availability of personnel is important because I need to know when the cast/crew are available for filming. This was arranged through a production schedule which states the date and time of the filming. Furthermore, I produced a call sheet and crew list. This states the cast/crew contact details incase I need to get in contact or they need to get in contact with me. This is so that if their is a problem like a change in the schedule the whole team will know.
Facilties are pivitol to the production because it covers aspects such as, production equipment. Production equipment is a key resource for the filming process as it will help bring the advert together. I already own a DSLR camera and Rode microphone for filming. However, I didn't own a steady tripod to produce the smooth, clean shots I aimed to achieve. To overcome this issue, I filled out an equipment request form to hire a Manfrotto tripod. I used a range of post-production equipment such as an editing software called Sony Vegas Pro. This allowed me to piece all the footage together and add the cinematic look to the advert using colour correction. Additonally, I used a 1TB hardrive to store my footage in suitable files. This means when I edit I can drop the footage in from my hardrive easily because it will be displayed in an organised way.
Moreover, I'll use a range of materials throughout the production such as sound library materials. I have a sound effect package to access the football kick sound effect as well as the spray sound effect. This will over-dub the original sound and add more realism to the scene. I'll use Creative Commons to find the music for the advert that is fresh and vibrant. This will then match the brief of my TV advert. I'll use my own photo-library materials in order to get a feel of the location so I am able to plan the TV advert visually whilst referring back to the photos I took of the location. This will help in planning where to set the camera up, placing the actors, etc.
On set, my contributors will be the actors we have hired for the shoot. I decided that we should make the most of the talent I have around me to help contribute with my advert. It is important that I have their permission and consent to use expertise within my advert. Furthermore, I will ensure they have fair pay and are working in a safe environment, this will be reinforced in the risk assessment I will produce. The location for the shoot is the key character in the advert so it's important that I have it hired. This will be done through the location recce sheet. It gives me fixed permission in case somebody asks me why I'm at the location and I can show them the signed signature by the location manager. I need to know elements such as, access, food, electricity supply, etc. This is because if there is an electricity supply, I can charge the battery up for the camera. I need to fill out a risk assessment for the location to highlight any risks that could cause harm to any cast or crew. This ensures that we are working in a safe environment and that I put the right steps in place to stop any hazards occuring. For example, if their is an audience near the location I could black the windows out to ensure they don't obstruct the shoot.

Task 2
Storyboard - This is the document where I can start to visually plan through images my idea. I can experiment with camera angles, editing techniques, etc.
Shot List - The shot list states all the sequences I need to shoot as well as breaking each shot down to the action and information such as locations, cast, etc.
Equipment Request Form - This documentation is important as I will need to hire certain equipment for my TV Advert.
Crew List - The Crew List states the position of the crew as well as vital information such as, name and address and telephone number.
Call Sheet- The call sheet highlights information such as, numbers for cast and crew and the telephone number for the nearest A&E and Police.
Risk Assessment Form - This documentation is one of the most important as it is about the overall safety of the cast and crew. It states all hazards and how to overcome them.
Location Recce Sheet - This sheet states all different elements of importance of the location such as, availability, access, suitability, etc. It also gives me fixed permission in case somebody asks me why I'm at the location and I can show them the signed signature.
Production Schedule - The schedule for the shoot helped massively as the date and time was stated as well as the location and I knew what tasks needed to be achieved. This made the filming process easier as I knew what was required from me.
Team Production Meeting Documentation - These documents highlight the actions achieved as a group and actions that need to be achieved. This is crucial so everyone in the group understands where we up to and what we need to achieve as a group and as individuals.
Task 3
As I look back now at the pre production planning of the TV advert, I can see how it has benefited me a great deal. Firstly, the storyboard was a great visual way for me to explore the look of the advert as I was seeing the images I had created turning into moving images in my mind. Also, the shot list was pivotal to the filming process as I had a short time to film the advert. However, due to the fact I had such a precise shot list I was able to get my teeth stuck in when it came to the shots that I needed to get. This is because everything I needed to capture was stated on the shot list such as, camera angles.
Furthermore, call sheets and contact lists were indispensable to the production as the contact details of the cast and crew were expounded. If I needed to get hold of any of the cast and crew for reasons such as, filming dates. These two documents would have their details clearly expressed. This makes it much more flexible when trying to discuss small or big problems that needed to be resolved. Likewise, the production schedule was essential to the production as dates and locations are clearly stated for the cast and crew. It also includes information such as, tasks that need performing on that day and other personal targets that needed to be achieved on the shoot. This ranges from bringing equipment, showing up at a specific time, bringing props, etc.
Before we started filming, I went on the search of different locations to see where the best place would be to film the TV Advert. The Sports Hall was the chosen location so I filled out a location recce sheet. This involved stating all different aspects of the location such as, access, possible shots, health and safety issues, etc. If we deconstruct the different sections such as, electricity supply. We understand that at the location there is multiple plug sockets. Now if I didn't fill this document in, I wouldn't know there would be plug sockets to charge my camera battery up. This could be vital on location if one of my batteries runs out. Additionally, having the sheet signed by a member of the sports team gave me permission to use the location as well as to show people on location if I was asked why I was there, that I have had permission.
One of the most important documents of the pre production process was the risk assessment. This ensured my group was working in a safe environment and any possible risks were highlighted. Audiences and camera cables were two examples of hazards on location. I rated likelihood and severity of each hazard and how to overcome it. For example, the hazard of audiences could be overcome by shooting out of sight of the public or blacking out windows or doors to stop people interrupting the shoot.
To conclude, pre production is essential to any production as it makes the filming process much easier and efficient as you are able to jump in straight away because important documents are completed and sheets such as shot lists are there to help you glide through shooting your project.
